Baby AH’s Long Weekend
February 23, 2008 at 6:28 pm | In baby AH, baby products, bathing, development | Leave a CommentIn the past 2 days, I have learned that:
1) Baby AH MUST have his morning nap. Yesterday, he didn’t and he cried and became very fussy the whole day. Even after few naps.
2) Baby AH can’t stand heat. I’ve seen few babies, who not could stand in rooms with no airconditioners but could also stand a typical Brunei wedding! Yesterday at the airport, not only was he fussy because he needed to nap but the (pretty much) non-existant air conditioner didn’t help as well. And today, we didn’t switch on the airconditioner at his atuk’s place, he became all sweaty and fussy and was only calmed down when he was bathed as soon as we arrived at home.
3) Baby AH sleeps in the usual vertical way but when he woke up this morning, he was sleeping horizontally on our bed. That was the first. The most move he had made was 45 degrees-ish only.
4) Baby AH loves to sit in his Bumbo sitter. He would be crying and when we made him sit there, he would almost instantly smile and look around him.
5) Baby AH puts on a ’scared’ face, everytime I bath him. Yesterday was only the 2nd time I bathed him. Hehe. I think he knew and hence, scared.
Baby Ah is turning 3 months next week!
Reply from Singapore Airline
February 23, 2008 at 4:05 pm | In breastfeeding, travelling | Leave a CommentI received a reply from SIA’s rep in Brunei yesterday.
“We refer to your email dated 19 February 2008 with regards to your enquiry.
The airport security at Changi and Incheon airports do not allow carriage of breast milk if there is no accompanying baby. Please be guided that the universal standard rule of carrying liquids in containers not more than 100 ml packed in a 1 litre ziplog bag applies.”
My questions, if I remember clearly were
1) Are we allowed to carry frozen or chilled breastmilk as carry-on and checked-in luggage?
2) If so, is there a limit to how much we are allowed to bring?
…or something along those lines…
I have responded to that email as I wasn’t sure if there was no accompanying baby, you can still bring breastmilk, as long as it is less than 100ml and are packed in 1l ziplock bag. Plus they didn’t say whether they have a policy if the EBMs were to be checked-in.
We shall wait for their response.
Breastmilk and Security
February 21, 2008 at 5:38 pm | In breastfeeding, working mother | Leave a CommentFollowing this post, I managed to do some research and emailed few people.
I emailed
1. Singapore Airline (as this will most likely be the airline I’m taking)
2. Royal Brunei Airline (for future reference as well as for my readers, if you decide to take the airline)
3. Aviation Security of Changi International Airport (considering that bringing liquid on board is a form of security risk)
I am currently trying to email Brunei’s Department of Civil Aviation as well as Incheon International Airport. However, I could not find any form of contact email addresses of DCA. I tried to submit a feedback through their main website but the submit button wouldn’t work! If anyone knows where to get their email address, do leave a comment. I rather send an email than calling them as I would not have proof of whatever they are going to say.
Incheon International Airport’s website, on the other hand, is taking forver to upload! I will update once I can access the website. – Managed to access the website, however, they only allow breastmilk to be taken on board when your baby is with you. What I don’t understand is, when you have your baby with you, wouldn’t you want to breastfeed your baby, directly?I wonder what DCA’s stand on the matter.
Besides emailing the above, I have found that Transport Security Aviation (TSA) has now allowed mothers bringing more than 3 x 3oz of breastmilk on board, with or without their child, so long that it is delcared at the security checkpoint. More information can be found on TSA’s website.
If all my emails are replied and they tell me I can bring my EBMs on board, the emails will be printed in case they say otherwise.
Insya Allah, I will update this website if I receive any replies. Maybe one of these days, I will give DCA a call and see what they have to say.
Travelling and Breastfeeding
February 19, 2008 at 9:09 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, travelling, working mother | 1 CommentYesterday, our unit received approval for me and my colleague to attend a course overseas in April. Including travelling time, we will be away for about 9 days.
After much consideration (to be honest, I am still considering of taking baby AH), we have decided that baby AH will not be coming with me as not only will I be at the course the whole day for 5 days and that there will be a significant amount of travelling time (I need to transit) but he will be hardly 6 months old (4 months ++ only) to be taken to places, where I have never been to myself!
If you have read my previous post, I am very much reluctant to give baby AH formula and baby AH has only had formula during his jaundice period to ‘top up’.
Pre-calculation showed that I will need to prepare 12 bottles of 3.5oz – 4oz of milk per day away, assuming he is feeding every 2 hours. If I am going away for 9 days, I will need to prepare 108 bottles and I thought to play it safe, I will prepare 120 bottles instead.
Currently, I am expressing 3-4 times a day, getting 2 bottles at each expressing session. This will give me 7-8 bottles for baby AH to feed on the next working day, although he will usually feed on 6 bottles only. If this happens, I will usually not express at night.
Based on my calculation, if I am to prepare 120 bottles for baby AH while I’m away, I will need to express 2 extra bottles each day- packed and freezed. This would mean that I need to eat and drink more and find more time to express. Insya Allah, I am going to try my best to do it.
Have any of you gone away while still breastfeeding your baby? How was it for you? How did you do it?
Besides that, I also have to think of expressing while I’m away so as that my supply does not diminish. Perhaps it is easy for me to request the hotel to freeze my EBMs, I’m wrecking my brain thinking, however, on how to transport it. I’ve read somewhere that you could use a lot of ice packs to transport it but now with the liquid restrictions, can you still do it?
I am going to do some research and will insya Allah, share it here
Diapers, Diapers, Diapers…
February 17, 2008 at 9:59 pm | In baby products, shopping | 2 CommentsJust a quick update

p.s. we calculated that we spend approximately $65 – $75 a month on diapers alone. alum lagi formula tu. erk! oh, if you want to share formula prices (or other prices for that matter), please do!
Trying to Breastfeed
February 15, 2008 at 12:05 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, motherhood, working mother | 9 CommentsI have been meaning to write on the challenges of breastfeeding for so long, in fact, I have even drafted one but never got around to publish it.
Then I read Mama Hafiy’s post and I couldn’t agree more. I found myself nodding throughout the post.
Prior to Baby AH’s delivery, I had read a lot on breastfeeding and most made it sound as if it is the most natural and simple thing to do.
While it is, of course, the right to do, it is far from easy.
The first week baby AH was born, he spent a lot of time sleeping (being on pethidine contributed to this too!). I was taught to breastfeed on demand, which to my understanding would be to breastfeed when he’s hungry. If baby AH is sound asleep, it meant that he was not hungry, right? Plus it gave us time to sleep too! Selfish, I know.
On his 7th day, I had to pay for it. Baby AH was diagnosed with jaundice and had to be admitted to RIPAS for extensive phototherapy. His JI was 18, I think and his bilirubin level was almost 500. I cried from the moment the doctor told me that he had to be admitted till the day before he was discharged. It was here I succumbed to FM as apparently baby AH was not getting enough milk from me. However, I didn’t stop from giving him BM and started expressing a lot too.
I remember the second night in the hospital, I was expressing in the middle of the night and because I was using Avent bottles and the hospital’s pump was a Medela, it didn’t quite fit. So, there I was, expressing and I dropped the bottle as I fell asleep! I think I must’ve had almost 2oz of EBM already after almost an hour! I cried and I cried but ‘no point in crying over spilt milk’, yeah?
I think if it wasn’t for my mum who made me milo ALL the time and encouraged me to breastfeed, I would’ve given up BF completely then.
We then tried mixing FM and BM, once we were at home but I think, we only managed to do it few times (by few I mean 3-4 times) before my milk started to really kick in and I decided to completely stop FM! I guess, I’m lucky that baby AH still likes my BM, rather than the FM we introduced him to.
Many has said a lot of discouraging things to me but I just chose to smile and ignore. At times, it hurts but I like to think that they are just saying it out of experience and only have mine and baby AH’s interests at heart.
I chatted with mothers who have bf-ed or bf-ing their babies for at least 6 months, I read blogs on mothers who are bf-ing their babies (so I can feel jealous and continue to bf my baby) and I google on how to increase my supply.
Besides that, getting a nursing pillow (I now have two! Haha.) helped too. Previously, I had problem on latching my baby on and my arm would be numb too. Alhamdullilah, with the nursing pillow, it is easier for my baby to latch on, my arm doesn’t feel as numb anymore and moreover, I have less backache too!
Oh, with the proper latch on, Alhamdullilah, I don’t get sore and cracked nips anymore (palmer’s helped a lot too!).
I, now have worked for almost a month and although I have bought a small tin of FM (those things are expensive, huh?), it remained unopened. Everytime I pray, I pray that I will continue to bf my baby for as long as I can.
I know it is a personal choice if mothers choose to feed their babies with FM and I have nothing against that. My post is just to share with you that my journey to bf my baby wasn’t easy. There were a lot of crying (by the baby AND myself!) and there were many times, I just wanted to give up.
If you decide to bf you baby but finding it difficult, here are what worked for me (it may work or may not on you) besides the obvious:
1. Get a nursing pillow! Mothercare sells them (very expensive too, if I may add!) but I got mine from Huaho for much less and from KL (they deliver to Brunei too!) for much, much less! Leave me a comment if you want to know how to get one. It lessens the pressure of trying to get the bay to properly latch on.
2. Don’t let people’s discouraging words get to you- ‘Maybe you’re not producing enough milk’ is a favourite. Another one is ‘your breasts will sag’.
3. Reading books will tell you that bf-ing is the best and most natural thing to do and it puts you under a lot of pressure to continue to bf-ing baby. It is the best but it is not easy. Read blogs or forums and you will know that most mothers share the same feeling- bf-ing is challenging but you ahve to persevere!
I’m such a Mummy…
February 10, 2008 at 10:08 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, motherhood | 5 CommentsI get excited at comparing the prices of diapers and nappy rash cream!
If you’re a Huggies Ultra mummy, the Indian shop by my house sells it at $14.50, the cheapest I could find so far. Apparently Utama Grand sells it for $13.90 but on two occassions, it was selling for $15.30!
And if you’re a Drapolene mummy, Pertama Store sells it for $4.80, again, the cheapest I could find. Supasave sells it for $5.95! Guardian $5.50, Hua Ho Gadong $5.20 and Hypermart $5.00.
I am now trying Huggies Dry as well as Baby AH changes diapers a LOT! He poos more now (which is apparently normal for breastfed baby said the doctor) and he demanded to be changed immediately! Today, he poo-ed, demanded to be changed immediately and rupanya alum habis! Har har har. You can guess lah ah what happened… No, silly. He continued to poo after I changed him.
Oh, I used to get excited over cotton balls as well but now I have plenty of stock from constantly buying them! Haha. I like to buy them from Hua Ho, btw
p.s. I’m really bad replying the comments here. just to let you that I really appreciate the comments (I even went to Nature Farm to buy fenugreek supplements
but have yet to try the Mall’s bf-ing and changing rooms). keep the comments coming
)xx
Can’t live without my steriliser!
February 4, 2008 at 9:40 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, feeding, working mother | Leave a CommentTwo Fridays ago, my steriliser broke down on me.
As I have become one of those, who ‘prefer’ to wash the bottles herself, I, now, also have to sterilise the bottles manually by myself. By manually, I mean, ensuring there is enough water boiling in the thermopot and subsequently, immersing them in the hot water.
Although the maids would usually help wash and sterilise them for me, I would find myself washing and sterilising them again! It was horrifying! I would be tired from work but I would do it after dinner before night expressing and then washed them again before going to bed. In the morning, when I woke up, I would immerse them in hot water, did my Subuh prayers before expressing again. Before going to work, I would wash and sterilise them again..
So when I received the call letting me know that they were replacing my steriliser with a new one, I was happy beyond words.
With preparing 8 bottles a day, including washing them up and expressing twice- all within the little hours I spend at home, I so cannot live without my steriliser!
I can now spend more time online while baby AH is sleeping. Hehe.
