Such a Challenge!
May 27, 2008 at 10:22 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, travelling, working mother | 6 CommentsI just threw away 24oz of EBM down the bathroom sink. These were of the ones I expressed when I was in transit.
The hotel I’m currently staying is apparently what they called a business hotel in Tokyo and it does not have a freezer! The fridge in my room is obviously tiny, like everything else in the room. Sigh. The fridge is now full, so for every bag of EBM I chill, I have to take out one bag on a ‘first in, first out’ basis. SOBS!
It has been a long day as we went for a site visit earlier. Then went to Ginza to have dinner as we finished at 6pm today. I’m knackered and deeply sad (over the EBM, some mummies may know how one can get overly sensitive and emotional over our EBM. hehe.).
I still heart Tokyo though. The people are just so cute (not in terms of just looks but the way they carry themselves).
However, I am starting to miss baby AH a lot
He turns 6 months today and I was video calling with him on msn earlier and he was trying to find where my voice came from-I got a bit emotional.
Aaaaaah. Why am I hormonal? Hehe. Time to sleep! G’nite y’all!
Alhamdullilah!

Congratulations to N & Z on Baby Nayarra
Congratulations to E & hubby on Baby Naira Amanda
Welcome to parenthood! Hehe. xx
Knackered Out of My Mind!
May 24, 2008 at 10:38 pm | In baby AH, travelling, working mother | 1 Comment….and the only person to blame is myself, unfortunately! Sigh.
Only had 4 hours of sleep in Singapore. No thanks to GSS, which started yesterday too (coincidence or what? haha.). Managed to sleep throughout the whole flight and only woke up to eat. Haha.
We’re now in Tokyo and looking forward to see what’s the hype all about at Harajuku and ‘gadget sightseeing’ at Akihabara tomorrow- some play before hitting the real world on Monday. Hehe.
Good nite y’all!
p.s. baby AH- mummy miss you. sadang meliat AF. go to sleep. it’s past your bedtime. oh, don’t let nini babu and nenek babu feed you van houten and ice cream. hahaha. love you my munchkin!
What a week!
May 19, 2008 at 6:56 am | In baby AH, breastfeeding, development, travelling | 3 CommentsIt has definitely been a busy week, with birthdays (Bushu, Fez, Hudiya, Ina, Aini, Raimi and Carol- did I miss anyone?) and engagements (okay, only one- Congratulations Ay!), being sick (took a day off mid-week) and lots & lots of work.
Plus, I have been stocking up on my EBMs furiously to make sure I have enough for my trip and at last count, insya Allah, baby AH will have enough. This also meant that I took baby AH with me everywhere. To the bank, grocery shopping, late night engagement party (Ay, special appearance tu. Only for his aunt Ayay. hehehe.) and to just about anywhere I have to go, except for work obviously.
Baby AH, on the other hand, has been feeding less and less. On Saturday, he only had 3 bottles (i.e. 12oz) whilst I was at work. He’s waking up more at night now too. I was told that baby AH is probaby hungry for food and not milk.
Well, I tried giving him EBM by using his weaning utensils (learned from Hafiy’s Mami. hehe.) but he was more interested in holding the spoon and feeding himself but obviously, the milk spilled.
Soon my darling, soon.
I am now planning to get better as I have been attacked by the flu and sexy voice (ie. sore throat) again. I also need to wrap up a lot of other things. Uwaaaa.
Have a good Monday y’all!
p.s. Adam’s mum- I emailed you with my contact number last week. Haven’t heard from you. Let me know, yeah. I’ll be away again this weekend and next week.
It is only Monday
May 12, 2008 at 9:26 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, travelling | 2 Comments…it already felt like a loooong week!
was trying to sort out my flights earlier and somehow, i’m still waitlisted despite SQ having 4 flights daily!
i now have to fly a day earlier, which means I need to express 12 extra bottles than what i have initially planned. i don’t know whether i can manage to do so.
Baby AH will be turning 6 months when I’m away and we’re planning to only wean him when I get back, few days after he turn 6 months. so, he will still be on BM until then, insya Allah.
i need to be confident that i will manage to express enough for baby AH to feed while I’m away nanti.
Such a Pretty Nursing Room!
May 9, 2008 at 1:25 pm | In breastfeeding, travelling | 4 CommentsRemember how I mentioned in one of my earlier post that BOK provides a nursing room for their staff. I was searching high and low for the pictures in my laptop until I remembered that I was using my Lumix that time, in which I have lost all the photos due to memory card error
However, I still have photos of the nursing room at the National Palace of Korea Museum, which is sooooooo pretty! They obviously didn’t provide an electric pump like BOK did for their staff but I think the nursing room itself definitely make up for it! Hehe.
As you enter the nursing room, you are welcomed by the above! Pretty, huh? Sofa on the left, mini-pantry on the right.
This looks like a hot water dispenser. It probably is. In Korean bah all the labelling. Hehehe.
I THINK this is the fridge. It looked too high-tech, I didn’t dare touch it! Haha. Plus everything was in Korean as well. Nevertheless, the colour is pretty yaaa! I’m such a sucker for pretty things. Hehe.
This is the ‘baby girl’ nursing room. There are two smaller rooms in the nursing room- one for baby boy and one for baby girl. I only managed to take photos of the ‘baby girl’ nursing room but the ‘baby boy’ nursing room is exactly the same except that everything that is pink in this room is blue (obviously!) in the other room, this includes the nursing pillow! Yaaaa. They even have a nursing pillow in there. How nice, right?
And that’s the changing station with a pink pillow and mobile toys. Hehe.
So, while the mummy is feeding or changing baby, one can wait on the comfy sofa outside.
A sat out on the sofa, whilst waiting for me to take the photos and ooh-ing and aah-ing the room!
I love my PISA!
May 9, 2008 at 12:47 pm | In baby AH, baby products, breastfeeding, working mother | 10 Commentshehe. I finally used my PISA. I bought the adaptor from Hua Ho Manggis and we were ready to go! Hehe.
What I like about it:
1. It’s electric! Inda sangal tangan. Huhu.
2. I can do double pumping at one time. Shiukkkk! Definitely cuts the time! Yesterday I managed to get 8oz in 10 minutes. Did a second let-down and had an extra 3oz in less than 5 minutes. Usually, I could do all this in 30-45mins on manual pump. Banyak break lagi pasal sangal :p
3. I managed to do ’self’-handsfree and used the laptop with both hands! har har har. My babu will definitely say, ’sadanggggggg sadangggggg.. hehehehe’.
4. Easy to assemble
5. Easy to clean
Of course, ada yang I don’t like lah ya:
1. It’s heavy and bulky! I use a big bag to work so, having another big bag was a bit susah. I found myself surfing for Medela Swing tarus! Hehehehehe. Can kah husband? (maybe I’m so used to Avent’s small out & about bag)
2. The small white valve (just like Avent’s valve)… It’s so small.. Takut hilang ler.
That’s all I can think of at the moment. Maybe as I use more, I will find what I like about it more (and hope not much dislike).
Plenty to do this weekend! I have to sort out my work area (read: scrapping, computer, camera, printer area), themed dinner to go to tomorrow night and a bouncer party on sunday.
Oh, i need to process my photos (try lah ah! i give up on photoshop easily. haha.) and sambung my scrapping.
Have a good weekend y’all!
p.s. Baby AH: Happy Belated Birthday Uda and Uncle Spikez and Happy Birthday Uncle Zakman! I want to ikut tomorrow night but Mummy and Bapa said that they might stay till past my bedtime, so I’m guessing I have to stay home. They said MAYBE they will take me to Aunt Midah’s bouncer party, so hopefully, you all can spoil me there. Har har har.
Travelling without an Accompanying Baby
May 7, 2008 at 6:35 pm | In breastfeeding, travelling, working mother | 5 CommentsSo yes, I managed to prepare enough milk for Baby AH and express whilst I was away from Baby AH. I was away for about 9 days and prepared 9 bags of 12 x 4ozs. However, I was told that Baby AH only drank about 10 bottles the most a day, so I had 2 bags left, which I am saving for my next trip (nda mau rugi! hehe.)
On my way to Seoul, I had to transit in Singapore for about 14 hours. I managed to express once when we arrived in Singapore and once more before checking out. Here, I made a mistake of freezing the first batch instead of chilling it as obviously it thawed on the way to Seoul. You always read these contradicting rules on how long you can keep frozen EBMs once thawed or whether you can re-refridgerate heated EBMs, so just to let you know, I don’t usually follow any rules unless I feel like it. Har har. Bad, I know but as a general guideline I don’t usually re-freeze thawed EBMs and if the EBMs have been heated once but unused, I will put it back in the fridge.
Anyways, I packed my EBMs in the playtex bags, which I think was a mistake. Unfortunately, I have only brought that so I had to live with them for the rest of my trip. As I only tied the bags with rubber bands, the bags were leaking and I might have around 0.5-1oz from each bag. Sayang, I know! So, I reckon if you were going to travel and express the easiest and cheapest way of storing EBMs will be using the zip-lock bags (I use the Glad Freezer Bags but I remember someone commented on using zip-lock like bags, which you can also get from plastic shops
)
I didn’t have much (wait, ANY!) problems going through the customs at the gate. I probably had 10 bags of 60-80ml EBMs and they didn’t even say anything. Even if they did, I would probably compare my case to the guy next to me who brought a bottle of liqour, which was obviously more than 1L and was not bought at the airport. All they did with that guy was wrote his name and the name & amount of the liquor (I think!). So, I’m ‘guessing’ that if you have brought more than 1L of EBMs without an accompanying baby, they would probably just take down your details.
Once we reached Seoul, I didn’t want to throw my milk and prolonged it by making them keep in the freezer. Haha. Prior to the trip, I emailed the hotel requesting to use their ice-cream freezer for my EBMs. So, when we got there, I dug the email and told them about it. There were few miscommunication initially due to language barrier but after an hour or so, they finally understood what I wanted and sent room service to collect my EBMs with a tray! It was like that for the duration of my trip. On some days, they would come once in the morning and once in the evening, on other days, they would just come in the morning as I just kept my EBMs from the evening in the little freezer in the mini-fridge.
Yes, I only managed to express twice then. Once in the morning before work and once more in the evening, after work. I tried to express during lunch time on the first day but we only had an hour lunch (which was usually working lunch) and everytime I rush expressing, I end up with very little. With the two expressing sessions, Alhamdullilah, I managed to express 9-10 bottles a day. However, towards the end, I noticed that my EBMs were becoming less and less.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention- I contacted Singapore Airlines prior to my trip and asked if I could check in my EBMs as perishable cargo so it would be kept in the freezer whilst I was in transit on the way back to Brunei. Apparently, there was a miscommunication because when I used the word ‘cargo’, it actually meant shipping it as unaccompanied baggage or cargo (i.e. on the cargo plane). Nevertheless, the SIngapore Airlines staff there were friendly enough to check for me how much dry ice I could bring although it would be better if they could supply me with dry ice
So, the night before we checked out, I asked the hotel if they have dry ice, which they didn’t and suggested that Baskin Robins should have. 10 minutes later, they called me back saying that Baskin Robins finished their dry ice and that I could try going to DHL the next morning. Luckily, I had 2 sheets of techni-ice, which supposedly was enough to keep my EBMs cold ‘for days and not hours’ but I guess I didn’t freeze it long enough (about 24 hours only)
In the morning, when I requested Room Service to send me my EBMs, I was surprised to see how much I expressed over the week! Okay, maybe it was the size of the container that they used but I was happy to see the container properly lined with table cloth. However, the way it was stored in the container (bags lying down causing the milk to seep out of the storage bags) made me lost a lot of EBMs
Again, another reason to use zip-lock bags instead of the playtex bags. Luckily I placed the frozen EBMs in a zip-lock bag (about 4-5 bags in a zip-lock bag), otherwise the container would just be messy!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t fit all of my EBMs in my cooler box, I think I had to throw half of my ‘collection’. I lined the bottom and top of my coolerbox with techni ice sheets and then wrapped the box with brown paper. All in all, it probably weighed about 5kg. So, I need to remember to travel light!
My flight to Singapore was at 3pm and we were leaving for the airport at about 1pm. To reduce hassles, I didn’t express that morning and thought I would save it till I reached Singapore- it hurt! Har har. But what to do. So, the first thing I wanted to do when we arrived was obviously express (and eat! because they served Indian food onboard and I had enough of Indian food in Seoul. Haha.). Again, I had no problem bringing my EBMs through the customs at the gate. This time I had less than before, as I didn’t express in the morning so I could feed Baby AH direct when I reach Brunei. I probably had 500 – 600ml with me. Oh, I forgot to mention, I bought 4ox playtex storage bags and I didn’t like it. So, if you want to buy playtex bags, I would recommend 8oz bags. With 4oz bags, I had to fill 2oz only as anything more will cause it to leak A LOT as they were only secured by rubber bands.
On the plane, I asked if I could place my EBMs in their fridge or freezer (which I forgot to do with the SIN-INC trip!) but they didn’t have any as it was a short flight, so they gave me dry ice instead, which not only kept my EBMs cold but one or two was half frozen when I arrived in Brunei!
Once we reached home, the first thing I did was check my EBMs. To hope it was all still frozen was too much, I suppose but my EBMs half-thawed. So, I just quickly put them in the fridge to be used in the next few days (or week) whilst I was at work. It has been about a week now, and I have used up all my EBMs from the trip (except for 2-3 packets). All that I have expressed in the past week were stocked in the freezer to replace the ones that baby AH have been feeding on.
From today, I will have to follow strict expressing time again (hehe. yaa.. I’ve been a bit slack in that department as I knew there’s plenty in the fridge).
What I’ve learned from this trip:
1. Zip-lock bags are better (for me that is. hehe.)
2. Making prior arrangements with the hotel is important
3. Try not to give up! LOL. There were just sooo many times, I wanted to go out as soon as I finished work but I knew I had to express first.
4. Find an English speaking staff who can assist you. (Boy, J will be hard especially since the hotel’s website states that their staff speak very little English!
I hope this helps. I started writing this on Sunday and only kind of finished it today. Heh.
Teething
May 2, 2008 at 10:07 pm | In baby AH, baby products, development | 7 CommentsWe think the little one is teething.
Symptoms of teething as the New Parents Guide stated are:
1. Irritability- Baby AH is getting a little bit more fussy than before. He cries more and just get irritated oh-so-easily. However, he usually feels much better if we give him something (to put in his mouth!) or make him stand, so he thinks he’s taller than everyone else. The latter usually makes him smile!
2. Drooling- Baby AH drools a lot since birth. The elders like to say that I didn’t get to satisfy my cravings whilst pregnant. However, he now drools a whole lot more that he gets more rashes, which are kinda eczema-like (maybe its eczema, I don’t know).
3. Coughing- He’s not coughing but he gags a lot because we try to force him to feed. Hehe. He just won’t feed! Usually he drinks 5-6 (sometimes 7) bottles of 4ozs whilst I was at work. Now he only drinks 3-4 bottles. In the evening he is nursing less too.
4. Chin Rash- lots of drooling = rashes!
5. Biting & Gnawing- anything and everything that is put in his hands goes straight to his mouth. Last night it looked like he wanted to tear apart the teether. Poor Baby AH!
6. Cheek Rubbing and Ear Pulling- Not so much cheek rubbing but Baby AH always pulls his ear when he wants to sleep, so, I can’t really tell :S
7. Diarrhea- Emm. Not really. He hasn’t been feeding a lot so he is poo-ing less too. Wait, actually he poo-ed twice today. Not yesterday though. Hehe.
8. Low-grade Fever- Almost everytime when Baby AH has a little fever, he gets spots on his body, which they usually say that the food I ate was ‘panas’. This was the same recently. He was feeling a litle bit feverish and the next day he had spots again. Now the fever is gone and the spots are half gone.
9. Not Sleeping Well- defnitely! He only takes like 2-3 half an hour naps during the day and wakes up 2-3 times more now.
10. Cold-like Symptoms- emm not really on this one, which they say could be a result of when the baby puts his hand in his mouth a lot.
At the moment, I can’t live without this balm to help soothe baby AH’s drooling rashes but also the mozzy bites he’s been getting!
Checklist for Travelling without an Accompanying Baby
May 1, 2008 at 1:29 am | In checklist | Leave a CommentTravelling without an accompanying Baby
1. Breastpump if you’re still breastfeeding- I would usually bring my manual Out & About Avent set only as my Medela PISA was too heavy to bring. I’m certainly looking at investing in a Medela Swing too! Hehe.
2. Bottles to use with the breastpump, obviously. Hehe.- I would usually bring 2 9oz bottles as I usually collect about 20oz or 24oz after a long day.
3. Bags for your EBMs- This is of course according to the type you prefer as well as how long you will be away. I prefer storing my EBMs in glad freezer packets at 4oz each. I usually pump 40oz the first few days, diminishing to about 28oz – 32oz the last day. Hehe. So, I usually pack 10bags for each day.
4. Marker pen- to write the date on the bags!
5. Bottle washing liquid
6. Bottle brush
7. Sterlising equipment- Again, this is up to you. I used to bring sterlising tablets and a container. Now, I just bring a container and boil some water in the room.
8. Breast pads- If you’re working or even on holiday, your pumping time maybe restricted. Don’t forget the pads! Haha.
9. Cooler box/ bag- To transport your EBMs back with you. You might want to get a smaller cooler bag as well so you can separate the frozen and the chilled ones.
10. Techni Ice/ Dry Ice- To keep the EBMs frozen/ chilled. I use techni ice in my cooler box. However, for any EBMs that I carry on board with me, I’ve once asked for dry ice and few times, the crew assisted in storing my EBMs in their freezer.
11. Cellotape & Brownpaper- Or any other wrapping paper. I used these to wrap my cooler box just so it looks decent as well as to avoid breaking the handle.
