Substitutes

I have emailed to MOH with regards to their recent press release, as below.
I refer to your website and press release on Saturday, 27th September 2008, with regards to milk and dairy products from China, in which one of the products shown was the popular baby biscuits’ Take Want Baby Bites (Carrot Flavour).
I would appreciate if you could clarify/ confirm the following:
1. Take One Baby Bites (Carrot Flavour) has been confirmed to contain melamine.
2. If Item 1 is confirmed, how come it is not on the list that has been attached on the website?
3. ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR of the Take One Baby Bites is contaminated but NOT the ORIGINAL FLAVOUR and the CHICKEN & VEGETABLE FLAVOUR
4. If Item 1 (and Item 3) is confirmed to contain melamine, what will be the effects to babies/ toddlers in Brunei since it seems to be a favourite among Bruneian mothers? Should we be concern? How many packets does a baby need to go through for it to have an effect?
5. As your media release has shown that ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR is affected, Sim Kim Huat was found to be still selling the other flavours on Sunday, 28th September 2008 and they were adamant that these other flavours were not affected and can still be sold to the public. I’m afraid I find this ridiculous because regardless of MOH’s press release that ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR was found to be contaminated with melamine based on the information given by INFOSAN, WHO, the other flavours are STILL MADE IN CHINA and they contain MILK. So, unless proven that they do not contain melamine by any laboratories, the products still fall under dairy products from China, which should not be sold to the public under the press release made by MOH on 20th September 2008. Also, Singapore has still Take One’s Baby Bites (all flavours, including Original and Chicken & Vegetable) on their ‘To Be Taken Off The Shelf’ List.
I hope your good Ministry can respond to this email as soon as possible. For your information, this email is also being copied to Brunei’s Mothers’ Forum for their information.
Any mothers have found substitute for Baby Bites yet? I’ve tried Farleys and Milna but they are both ‘messy’ and I don’t think I can give that to AH during Hari Raya visits :S I’ve also triend Heinz teething rusk but they are horribly hard!
I’m thinking of preparing plain pasta and plain wholemeal toasts for AH to hold on when we are on our Hari Raya visits. What about you?
Yaay!
September 25, 2008 at 4:53 am | In babyme | 2 CommentsI took the plunge- went ahead and bought it.
It SHOULD arrive in 6-10 days. Can’t wait!
Take a guess!
p.s. if you’re on my facebook list, you cannot guess :p
Baby Bites!
September 24, 2008 at 10:52 pm | In baby products, recall | 3 CommentsI have just received the shock of my life (drama queen but you’ll understand why soon).
In my previous post, I mentioned about formula from China being recalled in fear that they are contaminated with melamine.
About 30 minutes ago, the hubby was getting some snacks and realised that Baby Bites are Made in China!!!! I freaked and had a look at the box and indeed, it is Made in China and it has milk as one of its ingredients!!! *FAINTS*
Hubby said not to panic and to go google it up. Below are what I found
List of products being taken off the shelves in Singapore
List of products sold in Singapore detected to contain Melamine
FAQs regarding Melamine contaminated products by AVA SIngapore
If you’re not sure how Take Want Baby Bites look like.
pic from here
What upsets me is that I didn’t bother to check where AH’s biscuits were made from because I simply listened to people when they told me that we hardly import food products from China
I am also upset because the notice from MoH came out on Sunday’s Papers and I bought 2 packets of Baby Bites from Uta** Gra** on Sunday Afternoon.
Yes, Baby Bites have not been tested positive for Melamine but it contains milk and it is Made in China. It has been taken off the shelves in Singapore and I gave AH Baby Bites during sungkai today. Sigh. I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry and just not eat it until it is confirmed that they do not contain Melamine.
I hope the local authorities do ensure the said products are not being sold for the time being and if possible, get the local labs to test, independent of the other countries’ tests.
Uwaaaa.
September 22, 2008 at 10:56 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, travelling | 5 CommentsI’m back and knackered to the bone. I haven’t finished unpacking and I am already running around trying to sort Raya preparations- sorted out AH and hubby’s bajus, biscuits.. but I still need to siapkan making envelopes and raya tags.
Work is crazyyyy! I’m trying to get out of a thing which requires me to travel again next month but to no avail
My leave has also been tentatively postponed and by tentatively, I don’t mean I could possibly get it earlier but I could possibly not have leave AT ALL! Well, not until NEXT YEAR anyway. Nevertheless, I am hoping next month will be my last travel for this year. I am tireddddddd!
To top all that, one of my fridges broke down whilst I was away and I had to throw about 60 packets of frozen EBMs!! Sedih!!! But what to do? I can’t possibly keep them, right?
AH had a temperature again last night and his top gum looked a little bit red and I think we can see little white buds waiting to pop! My poor baby! He is still his usual self pulang but a little bit more manja. Suka ulit-ulit di badan and prefers to sleep with daddy- poor mummy! Hahahaha.
I wanted to print photos of AH for his album but I have not even processed them! No timeeee. Uwaaaa.
Will reply comments soon. xx
What’s Next?
September 17, 2008 at 8:44 am | In baby products, breastfeeding | Leave a CommentUsually you hear toys being recalled but of recent, powder milk (formula) are being recalled too!
Read here
Then, I found out that 49% of Sanlu is owned by Fonterra- the NZ company behind Anmum, Fernleaf and Anelene and they have now, recalled Anmum Materna but for Chinese Market only.
However, they have assured that Fonterra’s products being sold in Asia ex. China, HK, Taiwan and Macau are produced in New Zealand.
But a mother still can’t help feeling bovvered what else in the market is going to be recalled next, right? BF mothers can be less worried because they know their milk can’t be recalled. Har har. Even drinking alcohol (for you non-muslims mothers) should not affect your milk much if you drink reasonably.
Habis-habis keluar merah-merah arah muka baby or constipated because mamanya ate too much Indian food and seafood during pantang. Heeee!
Four more sleeps…
September 16, 2008 at 9:33 pm | In baby AH, breastfeeding, travelling | 1 CommentI think AH is enjoying Singapore too much, especially since he gets to meet Thomas! Har har. We, initially, wanted to take him to the Thomas Show at Singapore Expo but I thought it was a bit too far and I was going to be tired (read: karang inda sampat shopping. haha.)
On the breastfeeding side, I have been stuffing myself eventhough I am already full. The past 2 days, my amount of expressed BM have decreased by about 2oz or so. I have increased my water intake as well as taking fenugreek supplements again. Hopefully, I will get my supply back soon.
G’nite y’all!
Singapurrrrr.
September 14, 2008 at 7:16 am | In babyme | 6 CommentsThe weekend is almost over and I have another working week before I head back! Yaaay!
Ramadhan on this side of Singapore is not the same. Well, Ramadhan in Singapore is never the same as Brunei, of course! I think, the Geylang area is the only area where Ramadhan (and Hari Raya) could be felt. But the area where I am staying, Halal food is even harder to get! There’s a food court adjacent to the hotel but there is only one Halal Indian restaurant there and you all know how I feel about Indian food. Then there’s BK on the ground floor but once for sungkai is enough. Heh. There’s a small Halal restaurant behind the hotel but by the time I come back from work, they do not have much left. My brother found a 24hour mamak restaurant around the corner, which I have yet to try the food though!
If only we were staying at Orchard! Har har har. For the food of course, not the shops :p
Alhamdullilah, AH is doing fine after a temperature scare few days ago. Of course, as orang tua-tua always say, kan keluar pemandainya kali. Hee-hee. We also think that he is missing his bapa as he woke up in the middle of the night crying ‘bapa, bapa..’ once or twice. Babu said that AH is probably having sympathy fever because his mummy yang rindukan bapanya. LOL. Now, AH likes to babble A LOT! Ada saja ‘cakapnya’. Once, he said ‘inda ada’ when my brother asked ‘ada kan socket di belakang atu?’. Pure coincidence probably but we still had a good laugh. Har har.
On breastfeeding in Ramadhan, Alhamdullilah, I have managed to keep up my supply for AH. My pumping schedule during working time here is once before I head off to work (I usually get 8oz) and once when I get back in the afternoon (around 12oz) plus direct feed during lunch time. When I am away, he usually feeds around 12 – 16oz. Alhamdullilah, the fridge is now well stocked with EBMs that I can even afford to bring EBMs out on shopping trips over the weekend. Hee-hee! Oh, I have to make sure I have rice for both sungkai and sahur to ensure I maintain my supply though, so, thanks Babu for coming along, not to only help jaga AH but also to ensure we eat fresh nasi for sungkai and sahur too! Yar, over the working week, I prefer to tapau sungkai and eat in the hotel room as I am just too knackered to go out!
I will now head back to bed and enjoy sleeping in before having to wake up early again for the rest of my stay here. Sobs.
p.s. look at how happy AH is when we first got in. Hehe.
Overpacking, again!
September 6, 2008 at 10:23 pm | In baby AH, baby products, breastfeeding, travelling | 2 CommentsI always-always overpack! Doesn’t matter whether it’s a 3 days trip or a week’s trip and in this case, 2 weeks trip!
This trip, I have decided to bring some frozen EBM so there won’t be so much pressure to express and come back to the hotel during lunch time. Plus, some of them are expiring in the next two weeks- so might as well.
Also as AH is on solids already, I was contemplating on whether to just bring the blender or something else. I completely forgot about instant cereal! So, quickly ran to Utama Grand and bought packet ones in 3 different flavours. With AH being 9 months already, I sometimes let him taste whatever I was eating without actually letting him eat- just at the tip of his tongue or on his lips, letting him lick it. Hehe. Plus, AH’s main source of food is still my breastmilk, I am not too worried on what food to feed him. I am thinking of just hitting the supermarket as soon as I get there and stock up on some fruits for him to eat.
Besides his instant cereal and a LOT of biscuits (overpacking again!), I was contemplating also on whether to bring 2 weeks stock of diapers or not. The husband insisted on googling for price of diapers in Singapore and turned it out that it cost more or less the same. Although it doesn’t weigh much, diapers take up a lot of space in the suitcase! So, am just going to bring some to last AH for the next few days and just buy there. Phew!
Haha. Then there are packing my clothes and AH’s clothes. Took out one of each type and I thought I should be fine. LOL.
Ooh. I have decided to bring my PISA with me too! Wuu-huu. I was seriously dreading manual pumping! Oh, single pump too! Erk! The thought of having to make sure I don’t leak one side while pumping the other side is enough to motivate me bringing my PISA on board even! But I have managedto fit it in my suitcase. So, that should be fine, insya Allah. (beli freestyle or not ah. har har har.)
Off to bed I go. G’nite all!
Temptation
September 2, 2008 at 9:50 pm | In breastfeeding | 1 CommentI am tempted to get the Freestyle after listening (more like reading. hehe.) to Idola and Lina gushing how great and portable it is.
The PISA is what I am currently using and I absolutely love it! However, it is not very portable and I have never brought it travelling.
Whilst purchasing the PISA was relatively an easier decision, trying to purchase the freestyle needs more justification. I used to think the PISA was expensive until my friend started to share how much she spends on formula each month. Then, one of my aunts said to me, ‘you would spend hundreds and even thousands on a handbag and you’re still contemplating on whether or not you want to purchase an electric breast pump?’
Whilst the husband doesn’t need much convincing when I told him I want to buy a freestyle, he did ask me to check it out in Singapore first before purchasing it. So, this is the hard bit- I need to convince myself to buy it. I know freestyle will make it easier for me to express on-the-go and it is less bulky to bring around, I don’t think I want to leave my PISA lying around or just use it for my early morning sessions.
I thought of selling it (with brand new accessories) but I don’t know if anyone would buy it or if I could part with it. Or as I mentioned before, use it for at-home sessions only and take the freestyle to the office and when I need to travel.
Temptation, temptation, temptation…
