Avent BPA-free Bottles in Brunei!
May 15, 2009 at 11:45 am | In baby products, feeding | 3 CommentsIf you have been looking for bpa-free Avent bottles, you can now get them in Brunei!
I have been googling them and looking for ways to order it from the States but there are limited websites selling them and some are out of stock. Tried to look for them in KL and Brisbane too but tak ada.
Saw the 9oz and 4oz ones at Hua Ho TB last night, going at about 48.90 and 41.90 for a box of 2 each. Quite pricy, i think, but at least you do not have to change your bottles every 3 – 6 months in fear of breaking the plastic! Hehe.
I’m pretty much sure that all the shops where you have been getting your Avent supplies will sell the bottles ‘cos if I’m not mistaken, the Jln Tutong shop supplies all the Avent in Brunei except for Mothercare (which get their supplies direct from the UK, I was told).
Good luck!
Weaning Off.
April 12, 2009 at 7:37 am | In baby products, breastfeeding, feeding | 4 CommentsCouple of days back, I was texting with Adam’s Mum on which formula is the best when we decide to wean off our sons.
Everytime I go grocery shopping, I will pass the formula aisle and try to see what formulas they are selling- they are plenty and you don’t really know where to start. From past conversations with family and friends (please correct me if I am wrong as I have only managed to pick up bits & pieces):
- Nan (or Nan 2?) if you are supplementing a breastfeeding child and that your child is lactose intolerant
- Enfalac if you feed more formula than breastmilk
- Progress & Pediasure if your child refuse to take other milk
- Isomil for the more ’sensitive’ babies
That’s all I know when it comes to formula though. I don’t even know if it is right or wrong. How do you decide? I have heard of babies constipated from drinking formula, which I am assuming either it’s to difficult to digest or the mixture is wrong. Again, I don’t know. Those are all my assumptions.
Most of my breastfeeding friends have now started or are thinking of weaning off their babies. AH is 16 months and I have been thinking of supplementing him with formula when he turns 18 months. But I have also come across some readings saying that in some countries, mothers just give their kids fresh milk from a glass instead of formula. Some are also saying that for as long as that your kid is eating enough nutritious food at this age, formula is not needed. Can you tell I’m baffled?
The way things are going, I may have to start weaning AH much, much earlier than I plan to. The past 2 days, AH had cried and demanded his milk from the bottle instead of a direct feed when we were in the car. Yesterday, he had no choice though as we did not have any EBM with us. However, in the evening, when he is ready to go to bed, he is more than happy to feed directly.
So, now, I have to decide whether I want to continue expressing and give him bottled EBMs only or is this a sign that he is ready to wean off? I know, for the next 2 weeks, I am going to just direct feed him during our holiday. I will most likely continue to give him water, fresh milk, soya bean or non-sweet drinks to quench his thirst in between too.
What about you? How did you wean your baby off? Did he/ she show an indication he/ she is ready? Did you have to, say maybe because you’re pregnant (although I read that tandem nursing is safe)? Are you giving fresh milk or fomula? From a bottle or a glass? How did you decide which brand/ type to give?

Ah refused to sleep early last night and insisted on helping me pack (ish. haha. )
After realising I was not packing any of his stuff, he thought that he didn’t really have to help.
He got out of the suitcase and played before falling asleep on his playmat/ day mattress.
Missing you little one! Will see you next week, insya Allah. *kisses*
We are here right now.

We went here earlier in the evening and I almost threw up and fainted from the not just the massive crowd but also the HUGE selection of IT-related stuff. Almost got sucked into buying an MP4 player, supposedly for AH to watch his Thomas & Friends but really its for me to catch up on m tv shows. Hee-hee.

I was also tempted to test the 450D but the crowd at the Canon booth was horrible with queues at least 300m (or even more? I couldn’t really tell because there were queues at every booth!) long. We then went to the next expo hall for a Mega Expo Sale. Bought a Snow Bear food and bottle warmer, which looked exactly like MC’s POD Bottle Warmer but at about 30% of their price. Now I have to think on how to bring it with me tomorrow. Erk!
I shall rest now as we are heading here tomorrow.

G’nite y’all and have a good Monday! xx
Do you want the Medela Freestyle?
November 14, 2008 at 9:19 pm | In baby products, breastfeeding | 6 CommentsQuick Post.
I am ordering the Medela Freestyle Pump for my SIL this weekend. If anyone wishes to order one as well, leave me your email address.
I can also take order for the PISA but I have to warn you that it might cost almost the same as the Freestyle as the shipping is going to cost more. PISA weights almost double of the Freestyle.
Let me know ya!
p.s. Will update soon with pics, hopefully! I am finally on leave but I brought work home. Urgh.
Two Weeks
November 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm | In baby AH, baby products | 9 CommentsIt seems like the last time I blogged was 2 weeks ago! I don’t even remember what I’ve been doing except feeling extremely tired when I get home everyday. So many things to do, so little time!
AH will be turning one very soon and insya Allah, I shall reach my mid-term goal! I have also been busy trying to figure out how to approach AH’s nutrition intake once he reaches one. I am planning to continue with giving him my BM but most probably more from the bottle. In view of that, I am trying to look for a proper bottle warmer. Yes, AH is turning one and I do not have a bottle warmer yet. Haha. We have been using my niece’s bottle warmer when we’re in Jerudong and a thermos cup when we’re in Bunut.
Right now, I have narrowed down to 3 choices- Avent Express Bottle and Baby Food Warmer, Avent IQ Electronic Bottle and Baby Food Warmer and Mothercare POD Bottle Warmer. Initially, I was also considering Lindam Day and Night Feeding but have decided against it as it looks like it takes up a lot of space. If any of you has used any of the warmers, what do you think? Which one would you recommend?
Besides that, a friend has recently given birth to a baby boy and has asked me to get her a Medela breastpump (she actually wanted to buy off my PISA but I’m reluctant to let it go. hehe. kes sayang.). I am on a look out for her and might try to get her one in the next week or so. If anyone is on a lookout for a new Medela breastpump also, let me know.
On a different note, I am going on leave soon and I so cannot wait! Quality time with the hubby and AH. Have a good weeken y’all! I have another packed weekend this week, including a date with the husband! Hee-hee!
Pumping Love
October 16, 2008 at 11:30 pm | In baby products, breastfeeding, travelling | 11 CommentsLOL. Now that I get to use the freestyle (ex. the handsfree kit), I am beginning to love it.
I use to dread travelling without my PISA because pumping would just take twice the usual time as I had to use my manual Avent pump.
Why I love the manual Avent pump?
1) Its fully closed when you pack ‘em in your bag, so you can use it straight away
2) You can control the rhythm- pump, pump, pump, PUMP!
3) Empties your breasts well
4) It is very convenient to take it to work and travelling.
Why I then fell in love with PISA?
1) It’s an electric/ battery operated pump- easy on the hands!
2) It’s a double pump- half the pumping time!
3) Relatively less parts to wash
4) Helped increase my production- same time pumping and pumping is no longer a BIG chore
5) I can pump handsfree- ada skillnya ni. LOL. but since the hand is not pumping, my hands are free tia
Why I am now in love with the freestyle?
1) It’s an electric/ battery-operated pump
2) It’s a double pump
3) Less parts to wash/ sterilize
4) No tiny valves that can go missing while washing- BIG YAAY!
5) Should increase or at least maintain my production
6) I can still pump handsfree without the kit, using the same skill as PISA. Haha.
7) It is small enough to take with me while travelling.
I guess you can tell I am loving it so far.
In my last post, I wrote a comment on the prices.. In Singapore, it was around SGD900++ and in KL, it was around MYR2199, I think. I bought mine from ebay, and including shipping it was still cheaper. Do bear in mind that breastpumps are subject to 20% tax because apparently they are considered as medical equipment. I would think they should subsidize it (or tax free) if they want to support breastfeeding, considering we relatively dont get much ‘official’ support anyways :p
Away Again…

Raya, so far…
October 12, 2008 at 8:40 am | In baby AH, baby products, breastfeeding, travelling, working mother | Leave a CommentI have been to busy to blog because:
1. We are still doing Raya rounds. Heading of to Lumut today and loads more around Bandar.
2. Last Friday, the ILs had another open house and I gave up at past 11pm.
3. Work has been crazy. Enough said.
4. Market has been crazy and I am still trying to catch up on what has been going on on top of my paperwork!
5. AH has been very mobile, zooming past everyone and everything (by crawling still and I already get backaches come evening!). I still haven’t got a maid to call my own yet.
6. AH now has 4 teeth (they all seem to come real quick in short space of time too), so I now curl my toes and pray real hard everytime he starts feeding. He has been good so far though. Once he starts biting my nips, I tell him to stop biting and he listens most of the time! Hehe.
7. I’ve been eating and drinking like no tomorrow as my milk supply is not at its best at the moment. 6-7oz per session compared to the usual 8-10oz per session. Am blaming my erratic pumping schedule during Ramadhan and early Raya. Early Raya was spent direct feeding more and because he is eating more now, he doesn’t feed as much.
8. Patiently waiting for my freestyle to arrive. It has arrived but I have yet to pick it up from the post office! Just in time for my trip tomorrow too!
9. Planning our family vacation. Crazy politics, crazy exchange rates- how can one decide?!
10. And more importantly, I am finally catching up on my series! Am looking forward to spend more time watching it from my hotel room next week.
I’m off to wash the bottles and do some laundry now. Next post will probably be from wherever I am going to be next week. Hee-hee. Although I am thinking of squeezing in some spa and massage time. We’ll see.
Substitutes
September 29, 2008 at 9:15 pm | In baby products, feeding, recall | 6 Comments
I have emailed to MOH with regards to their recent press release, as below.
I refer to your website and press release on Saturday, 27th September 2008, with regards to milk and dairy products from China, in which one of the products shown was the popular baby biscuits’ Take Want Baby Bites (Carrot Flavour).
I would appreciate if you could clarify/ confirm the following:
1. Take One Baby Bites (Carrot Flavour) has been confirmed to contain melamine.
2. If Item 1 is confirmed, how come it is not on the list that has been attached on the website?
3. ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR of the Take One Baby Bites is contaminated but NOT the ORIGINAL FLAVOUR and the CHICKEN & VEGETABLE FLAVOUR
4. If Item 1 (and Item 3) is confirmed to contain melamine, what will be the effects to babies/ toddlers in Brunei since it seems to be a favourite among Bruneian mothers? Should we be concern? How many packets does a baby need to go through for it to have an effect?
5. As your media release has shown that ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR is affected, Sim Kim Huat was found to be still selling the other flavours on Sunday, 28th September 2008 and they were adamant that these other flavours were not affected and can still be sold to the public. I’m afraid I find this ridiculous because regardless of MOH’s press release that ONLY the CARROT FLAVOUR was found to be contaminated with melamine based on the information given by INFOSAN, WHO, the other flavours are STILL MADE IN CHINA and they contain MILK. So, unless proven that they do not contain melamine by any laboratories, the products still fall under dairy products from China, which should not be sold to the public under the press release made by MOH on 20th September 2008. Also, Singapore has still Take One’s Baby Bites (all flavours, including Original and Chicken & Vegetable) on their ‘To Be Taken Off The Shelf’ List.
I hope your good Ministry can respond to this email as soon as possible. For your information, this email is also being copied to Brunei’s Mothers’ Forum for their information.
Any mothers have found substitute for Baby Bites yet? I’ve tried Farleys and Milna but they are both ‘messy’ and I don’t think I can give that to AH during Hari Raya visits :S I’ve also triend Heinz teething rusk but they are horribly hard!
I’m thinking of preparing plain pasta and plain wholemeal toasts for AH to hold on when we are on our Hari Raya visits. What about you?
Baby Bites!
September 24, 2008 at 10:52 pm | In baby products, recall | 3 CommentsI have just received the shock of my life (drama queen but you’ll understand why soon).
In my previous post, I mentioned about formula from China being recalled in fear that they are contaminated with melamine.
About 30 minutes ago, the hubby was getting some snacks and realised that Baby Bites are Made in China!!!! I freaked and had a look at the box and indeed, it is Made in China and it has milk as one of its ingredients!!! *FAINTS*
Hubby said not to panic and to go google it up. Below are what I found
List of products being taken off the shelves in Singapore
List of products sold in Singapore detected to contain Melamine
FAQs regarding Melamine contaminated products by AVA SIngapore
If you’re not sure how Take Want Baby Bites look like.
pic from here
What upsets me is that I didn’t bother to check where AH’s biscuits were made from because I simply listened to people when they told me that we hardly import food products from China
I am also upset because the notice from MoH came out on Sunday’s Papers and I bought 2 packets of Baby Bites from Uta** Gra** on Sunday Afternoon.
Yes, Baby Bites have not been tested positive for Melamine but it contains milk and it is Made in China. It has been taken off the shelves in Singapore and I gave AH Baby Bites during sungkai today. Sigh. I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry and just not eat it until it is confirmed that they do not contain Melamine.
I hope the local authorities do ensure the said products are not being sold for the time being and if possible, get the local labs to test, independent of the other countries’ tests.
